Both the first volume of Cassirer's Philosophy of Symbolic Forms and Freyer's Theory of the Objective Spirit appeared in 1923. Programmatically, a legacy of Hegel is indicated, but the implementation could hardly be more different: on the one hand, a normative project that aims to consolidate the objective spirit, on the other hand, a descriptive undertaking that aims to bring the plurality of the objective spirit to bear and puts its normativity itself to the test. 100 years later, we can ask whether the distinction between normative and descriptive moments can be productively applied to contemporary reflections on cultural philosophy. Where did we stand then, where do we stand today?
